BEHIND THE STORY
This story started with a skateboard, a pair of Crocs, and a very determined little boy.
My son was learning to skateboard and insisted on wearing his Crocs instead of sneakers. I warned him. More than once. Then, one day, he fell.
And yes… I said it.
“I told you so.” 😂
But as soon as the words came out, I realized he already knew I had told him. Saying it again wasn’t going to teach him anything. It was just my ego wanting to be right.
So I hugged him, kissed him, and put on a bandage—just the way he likes it.
That moment made me think about how children learn from experiences. We don't always need to explain a lesson over and over. Sometimes they need to experience the consequence, feel safe afterward, and have a chance to make sense of what happened.
It reminded me of something we do when teaching little children about things like heat. Before they can fully understand “that is hot, don't touch it,” we might pretend to touch something hot, pull our hand away, and show them that it hurts. We're giving them a story their little brains can understand.
And that's where Yey, our educational advisor, came in. She reminded me that sometimes a story can reinforce a lesson more effectively than another lecture.
So Matilda was born.
A little yellow lizard who makes a very relatable mistake—and learns from it without needing anyone to say, “I told you so.”
Because sometimes the lesson sticks better when we let children discover it for themselves.
