Operation Power-Up

Summary

A massive asteroid made of space junk is hurtling straight toward Earth! The Defense Droids are ready to protect the planet, but their laser cannons need targeting data to break the rock apart. You are the targeting computer. Every subtraction problem you solve blasts away a huge chunk of the Junk-Steroid, making it smaller and smaller. Chip away at the asteroid until it’s reduced to zero and save the planet from impact!

Customize, download and print your Addition Robot Cards.

Look at each robot card and solve the addition equation.
Write or say the robot’s power level (the answer).
Cut out the cards and shuffle the deck.
Use the robots to play games like “Robot War” or sorting challenges.
Have fun while practicing your math skills!

Tip: Always solve the equation before using the robot in a game!

Variations

Beginner — “Build the Power”

Use objects or drawings to solve each robot’s equation.

How it works:
• For 3 + 4, draw 3 bolts + 4 bolts
• Or use blocks, coins, or buttons
• Count all to find the robot’s power

Goal: Make addition concrete and visual.

Intermediate — “Robot War”

Turn practice into a fast-paced card game.

How it works:
• Each player flips one card at the same time
• Solve the equation on your card
• The robot with the highest power wins both cards

Goal: Build fluency and quick thinking.

Advanced — “One Shot Robots”

Encourage careful mental math.

How it works:
• Use a pen to write the power level
• No erasing allowed
• Think before you power up your robot

Goal: Strengthen focus and accuracy.

Expert — “Sort the Squad”

Add strategy and number sense.

How it works:
• Lay out several robot cards
• Solve all equations
• Sort robots from weakest to strongest (ascending) or strongest to weakest (descending)

Goal: Deepen understanding of number order and comparison.
