A child’s imagination will lead them to discover the world, and, without realizing it, in that arduous process, they will also discover themselves. Every success and misstep will provide insights that allow them to align their imagination with their experience. They will discover, among other things, that their imagination almost never takes them where they thought it would, and their ability to make that adjustment will determine their experience of success.
For their part, the parent faces the challenge of bridging the gap between what they think should happen and what ultimately does. The parent's willingness to embrace the consequences and share their own learning experiences with their child will influence how secure or insecure their child feels during the process.
Both are called to grow together, embracing their limitations and finding inspiration in each discovered ability, developed skill, and acquired knowledge. Prioritizing connection over hierarchy and empathy over “I told you so” will allow them to mutually appreciate one another’s presence and kindly embrace the inevitable process of growth that life offers us.
